Maggie's Rules for Watercolor Painting:

Maggie's rules #1

If your painting looks different at the end ... than you thought it would when you began ... change the name of the painting.

If the flowers look like fish, put tails on them. Change the name of the painting from "In the Garden" to "Under the Sea".

About

Maggie Nevens "I want to share the fun, excitement, and joy that I have found in watercolor painting." says award winning Sarasota, Florida, artist and teacher, Maggie Nevens. Maggie Nevens lived in the Chicago area until 1990 where she studied art through the graduate level at Northern Illinois University. Maggie taught art in Illinois and Florida public schools before moving to Sarasota.

Nevens developed and implemented a series of watercolor classes for adult beginners. These popular classes have led many of her students to continue their own pursuit of art and art education. As Maggie’s generous workshop and classroom teachers have guided her to develop her own style, she helps each of her students to find themselves in painting.

Currently, Maggie Nevens’ lively classes and workshops are popular on land and at sea. Maggie teaches aboard Azamara, Cunard and Celebrity Cruise Lines. "I love to work with people who have never picked up a brush and show them how to make a painting of which they can be proud. We experiment with technique and sometimes literally play with the paint."

Maggie's rules #2

If you have already changed the name of your painting and you are still not satisfied ... put the painting in a drawer for 6 days. Then look at it. You won't remember what you were trying to do when you painted it and you may discover a very good painting.

CLASSES/WORKSHOPS

PAINT LIKE CRAZY WATERCOLOR and MORE

PAINT LIKE CRAZY: WATERCOLOR and MORE

is a non-traditional approach to painting for beginners, re-starters and intermediate painters who want to let loose, have fun, and paint like crazy.

The technique most often used is wet into wet watercolor, with tips and tricks to make successful paintings. We often paint without drawing and without reference photos. The results are loose interpretive renderings of the subject.

Classes generally focus on painting elements of the natural world including landscape and floral.

Sessions include a lesson, a step by step demonstration, student painting time, and individual help as the students desire.

These classes are designed for people who have never held a brush, as well as re-starters and experienced painters. Classes include color mixing, suggested materials, and basic technique. Special effects are introduced to create pattern and texture.

Maggie's rules #3

It may be necessary to turn your painting up-side-down. Before you decide about those finishing brush strokes, be sure to look at it up-side-down. Often the bottom makes a much better top.
